Contract staffing or permanent hiring: how to decide

The right answer depends on how permanent the work is — not on how urgent the vacancy feels this week.

Ask how long the work exists

If the workload is tied to a project, a season, an export order or a model changeover, the role is temporary even if the person is excellent. Contract staffing matches the workforce to the actual duration.

If the work continues indefinitely and institutional knowledge matters, permanent recruitment is the cheaper option over three years.

Count the administrative load honestly

Contract staffing moves onboarding, documentation, attendance, payroll and exit settlement to the staffing partner. For a lean HR team running a ramp-up, that shift is often the real value, not the headcount flexibility.

Use try-and-hire where the risk is fit

When the role is permanent but the uncertainty is about the person, a contract-to-permanent route lets both sides evaluate performance on the job before conversion.

Agree the conversion terms at the start. Deciding them after six months turns a good hire into a negotiation.

Keep the operational direction with you

In a well-structured contract staffing arrangement, the staffing partner is the employer and you direct the work. Clarity on that split keeps supervision effective and expectations clean.
